What Will Web Typography Look Like in 2020?

Get ready to conquer the audience with your typography!

Voluminous and diverse, geometric and eclectic — these are only some of the characteristics, applicable to the typography trends 2020. Some movements are still the same as they were, others only gain their power to be transformed into another typographic phenomenon of the year.

Anticipating the upcoming typography tendencies, I’ve highlighted the most predictable ones to guide you on the way to a splendid design. Keep in mind that all the points are interconnected, which is a handy tip to use when you decide to follow a couple of trends at once.

Outline Fonts and Their Clarity

In the context of brutalism, still taking the leading positions in web-design, outline fonts hold up the higher grounds in trends: you can see them a lot in headlines and navigation menus. By choosing outline fonts you never risk to be missing out, that’s their total advantage.

Minimalistic and to-the-point designs resort to outline fonts with monolithic shapes, geometry, and vast spacing. And that won’t fade away in the upcoming year either.

Animated Typography

Technologies don’t go round in circles, they dramatically evolve and set almost no boundaries to your creative performance. So the websites use these opportunities to build the best and the most interactive platforms, which was barely possible not so long time ago. Kinetic typography, that’s how it can be also called, can take any form and kind of movement: bouncing chubby letters, floating thin cursive or disappearing by click characters. The more responding your actions on the website are, the more chances there are for you to revisit it.

Flexibility of Variable Fonts

Great as they are, variable fonts are obviously one of the best things that happened to the world of typography. Unfortunately, they’ve been granted a slow pace of employment in design, which is unfair, taking into account the potential they have. Nevertheless, more and more design apps get variable fonts support, boosting the demand for similar font options being included where possible.

With the digital design market slowly but surely spreading this trend around, we’ll be running into variable fonts on the websites and applications of our day-to-day use.
